Normally open all day; the Tourism Administration attraction page states “visit Jialulan at night, free of light pollution, and gaze up at the vast, boundless starry sky”. It has a paid car park, accessible toilets and a large lawn. It is currently announced as “temporarily closed for public service facility improvement works”; the reopening date is whatever the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration announces.

A coastal recreation area on Route 11, with the Pacific Ocean to the east; Taitung city and Fugang to the south cause some light pollution, while the direction toward the sea and the zenith are darker.

Open horizon: East, Northeast, Southeast, overhead. Facing the Pacific, the view to the east is completely open, suitable for the Milky Way, Moon and planets rising in the east.

Do not enter during the works. After it reopens, beware of strong coastal wind and little lighting at night, and do not go near rocks or the surf zone.

Tourism Administration attraction page: opening hours “open all day”, visitor centre 08:30–17:30; a grassy slope on a terrace at about 350 m elevation, with no gate. During the Balloon Festival (roughly June–August) there are parking and entry controls.

A highland grassy slope in the Huadong Rift Valley, much darker than Taitung city, though the Luye and Guanshan settlements in the valley still have lights.

Open horizon: West, South, North, overhead. The terrace looks west over the valley and is open north and south along it; the Coastal Mountain Range lies to the east.

The grassy slope has no lighting at night; stay away from the edge of the slope and the paragliding take-off area. During the balloon season there may be event controls and crowds at night.

Around the Xiangyang Forest Recreation Area on the Taitung side of the South Cross-Island Highway (~2,320 m), ringed by no towns — one of eastern Taiwan's purest dark skies. Facing south toward the Central Range, the rising Milky Way has almost no ground glow.

A Pacific island with few people and sparse street lighting — a rare low-light-pollution island sky off mainland Taiwan. Many roadside pullouts face the sea for the Milky Way arching over the ocean.
