Lantau Peak

Area: Islands District, Lantau Island

The 934 m summit opens east to the dawn over the sea and is Hong Kong's traditional “Fung Wong sunrise” hike. The 4.5 km route from Pak Kung Au to Ngong Ping climbs about 600 m; a sunrise attempt means a steep hike in darkness, usually before public transport runs. It is for experienced, properly equipped hikers travelling with companions, and should be cancelled in strong wind or poor visibility.

Kowloon Peak

Area: East Kowloon, Fei Ngo Shan

The established road and viewpoints face east toward Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay, with parts of the Kowloon skyline visible in clear weather. Fei Ngo Shan Road is narrow and some stretches lack a footpath, making traffic especially hard to see before dawn. Stay on established roads or trails, wear reflective gear, and never approach exposed cliff edges such as Suicide Cliff for a photograph.

Shek O Beach

Area: Southern District, Shek O

The main beach faces southeast toward the entrance of Tathong Channel, making a sea-horizon sunrise most likely in the winter half of the year; do not confuse it with the differently oriented Back Beach. Bus 9 connects from MTR Shau Kei Wan and suits non-hikers, but pre-sunrise service is limited, so check the day's timetable. Avoid entering the water after storms or heavy rain.

Tai Au Mun, Clear Water Bay

Area: Sai Kung District, Tai Au Mun

Tai Au Mun opens east to southeast over the sea, with established viewpoints in Clear Water Bay Country Park for watching the dawn. From the Tai Au Mun bus stop it is roughly a 1 km walk along Clear Water Bay Road to the car park and path entrance. The route is gentler than a summit hike and family-friendly by day, but before sunrise everyone still needs a light, close child supervision and a safe distance from cliff edges.

Ha Pak Nai

Area: Yuen Long District, Deep Bay

These west-facing mudflats overlook Deep Bay and form one of Hong Kong's signature sunset scenes. Oyster beds and shallow pools emerge as the tide falls, creating the best chance of reflections, so check both sunset and tide times. Stay on firm access routes, avoid trampling mangroves or disturbing wildlife, and reach the village via minibus 33 after walking from MTR Yuen Long.

Sai Wan Swimming Shed

Area: Central and Western District, Mount Davis

The coast faces west and the timber landing makes a strong foreground, but standing room is narrow and queues are common on holidays and at sunset. From MTR Kennedy Town, take a bus toward Mount Davis and descend the long staircase from Victoria Road. Steps and rocks are slippery after rain: give way, stay behind barriers, and do not obstruct swimmers or anglers.

Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade

Area: Yau Tsim Mong District, Victoria Harbour

The promenade runs west along Victoria Harbour, looking toward the sun as it drops beyond the western side of Hong Kong Island and lights the skyline. Around the June solstice it sets farther northwest, not necessarily behind the island towers. An easy walk from MTR East Tsim Sha Tsui makes this the most accessible option here, though major events can bring crowd controls.

Area: Islands District, Lantau Island

On Lantau's west coast, waterways and stilt houses form the foreground as evening light reaches the fishing village. Observe from public piers or waterfront paths rather than entering residents' walkways. Connect by bus from MTR Tung Chung or by ferry from Tung Chung or Tuen Mun; return services are limited, so check the last departure and locate your stop before dark.
