Sunrise & Sunset Times in New Taipei

The New Taipei City tourism site lists it as open year-round and free; its official page describes “strolling under a sky full of stars, accompanied by a beautiful starry sky, as night falls”. The lighthouse itself is open only 09:00–17:00 (until 18:00 in summer); at night, stargaze from the trails and the park lawn.

Sky: suburban (desk review)

The northernmost cape in Taiwan, with open sea to the north; there are lights from the Shimen and Jinshan settlements to the south and from the lighthouse itself.

Facilities: parking, toilets

Open horizon: North, Northeast, Northwest. The sea horizon to the north is completely open, suitable for the northern sky and objects rising in the northeast.

Moon, planets, bright constellations, meteor showers

The coast is very windy, and the northeast monsoon season (October–March) brings strong wind and rain, so it is not advisable to go then. The trail has no lighting at night; bring a headlamp and stay away from rocks and the surf zone. The Fuji Fishing Harbor temporary car park charges per entry, 24 hours a day, and is about 600 m away.

A roadside viewpoint on Route 102 (Ruishuang Highway). The New Taipei City tourism site lists it as open year-round with no gate, and its official page is itself illustrated with Milky Way and starry-sky photos.

Sky: rural (desk review)

A ridge-line road at about 531 m elevation, away from urban settlements. Shuangxi to the east and Ruifang and Jiufen to the west still show lights; the zenith and the southern sky are darker.

Facilities: none

Open horizon: East, South, West, overhead. The ridge is open on both sides, so you can see both the Shuangxi valley and the Ruifang direction; the north is blocked by terrain.

Milky Way, meteor showers, bright constellations, wide-field astrophotography

There are very few roadside parking spaces; do not park on bends or in the traffic lane. The ridge is windy, and winters are damp, cold and foggy. There is no lighting and no toilet at night, so go with others and watch for passing vehicles.
