Bortle 3 · Rural dark sky | Elevation 1350m | SQM ~21.4 | Best view South
Nobeyama Kogen sits at the foot of Yatsugatake, known for elevation, crisp air and the NAOJ Nobeyama Radio Observatory. Minamimaki’s official guide names it among Japan’s three selected starry-sky sites—ideal for pairing highland scenery, rail and astronomy.

Nobeyama’s appeal is a highland rural sky with an astronomy-research backdrop, not one selfie point. Slow down for dark adaptation and separate daytime observatory visits from safe night observing.
JR Nobeyama Station is a daytime gateway, but night sites are spread out, so pair lodging with a car. Check land use, parking and night-entry rules first; do not turn farm roads into stargazing car parks.
Open highland scenery does not mean every field is accessible. Be especially quiet near homes, farms and research facilities, dim car lights and screens, and prefer formal programs when you want interpretation.
Summer centres on the Milky Way; winter can give crisp Orion and trails. Highland nights run far colder than town, so warmth and spare power matter more than another lens during a long wait.
Keep Yatsugatake silhouettes, field distance and wide sky in frame to show Nobeyama’s scale. For observatory buildings, confirm permitted areas and hours; night sky never justifies crossing research-site boundaries.
Night roads bring wildlife, frost and farm-vehicle risks. Do not park on unlit shoulders or cross fields; if cloud, ice or fatigue reduces visibility, return to lodging instead of seeking a more remote site.
🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 20:49, sinks back near 01:29, and peaks around 21:59 at roughly 25° in the South.
Nobeyama Station on the JR Koumi Line is the rail gateway, but a car is more practical for dispersed night sites. Do not treat observatory visiting hours as night access; follow each venue’s official rules.
The village offers lodging, food, stargazing programs and astronomy facilities. Temperatures drop quickly after dark, while supplies and toilets thin out beyond the settlement.
Summer through early autumn suits the Milky Way. Winter visibility can be excellent, but severe cold means snow travel and warm clothing must decide the trip.
