Wanlitong Diving Tides

Before diving at Wanlitong, check tide turns and wave conditions. Slack-water timing is only a reference; follow instructors, local rules and site conditions.

Wanlitong: seven-day slack water and daylight

Each slack-water range is estimated as 60 minutes either side of high or low tide. The stronger-daylight range is four hours centred on the midpoint between sunrise and sunset. Both are planning windows, not declarations that conditions are safe.

Tidal range, spring and neap tides, and the Moon

Spring tides often occur near new and full moon, with a larger difference between high and low water and potentially stronger flow during the middle of the turn. Neap tides are more common near first and last quarter. Local current is not set by astronomical tide alone: wind, swell, seabed shape, and narrow harbor entrances all alter what divers encounter.

Spring tides usually occur near new and full moon and have the largest tidal range; mid and neap tides have progressively smaller ranges.

Sunrise, sunset, and underwater light

Once the Sun is higher, its light travels a shorter path through the water. In clear water with a settled surface, the hours around solar noon usually reveal terrain and color better. Low-angle light at dawn and dusk fades faster underwater. The table's daylight window is not a visibility forecast; suspended sediment, runoff, and waves remain decisive.

Getting there with equipment

  • Wanlitong village lies between Shizhu and Xunguangzui, and the coast from Wanlitong to Xunguangzui is officially designated an ecological protection area. Do not carry gear across its intertidal zone as a shortcut. Official source

Water entry and exit

  • The current plan allows daytime shore scuba at Wanlitong within 200 metres of shore. That is an outer activity limit, not permission to trample or enter anywhere along the coast. Official source
  • Night shore diving at Wanlitong is limited to designated areas within 100 metres of shore until 22:00. After 22:00 requires a separate activity-plan application; the daytime 200-metre limit does not carry over. Official source

Rules and ecological care

  • The Wanlitong intertidal ecological protection area requires visitors to stay out, remove no organisms, and take no shells, sand or coral rock. Dive observation must likewise remain zero-collection. Official source
  • May is the protection area’s rest month: no interpretation tours or entry programmes are arranged. A shore dive must not be used to cross or enter the resting zone. Official source
FAQ

Should I dive on a rising or falling tide?

What matters is slack water, not rising vs falling — the current is weakest around high and low tide, which is best for shore diving and snorkelling. Mid-tide has the strongest, most dangerous current. Match your entry to that day’s tide times and aim for the slack window.

How do I know the best time to get in today?

Check today’s high and low tide times on this page; the roughly 1-hour window around each turning point is slack water with the weakest current. Still confirm the day’s wind, swell, visibility and weather, and defer to your dive shop and on-site notices.

Can I enter the water as soon as the table shows slack water?

No. Slack water is only an estimated period around an astronomical tide turn. Waves, local current, visibility, entry and exit conditions, and closures still require an on-site check. Use a qualified instructor or guide when your training or knowledge of the site is not sufficient.

Does Wanlitong’s daytime range apply to night dives?

No. Night shore diving is restricted to designated areas within 100 metres of shore, and activity after 22:00 requires a separate application.

Tide times and heights come from the site's daily CWA forecast. Sunrise, sunset, and lunar phase are calculated at build time with the same astronomy engine used by the live pages.
