Lanyu Diving Tides

Before diving at Lanyu, check tide turns and wave conditions. Slack-water timing is only a reference; follow instructors, local rules and site conditions.

Lanyu: seven-day slack water and daylight

Each slack-water range is estimated as 60 minutes either side of high or low tide. The stronger-daylight range is four hours centred on the midpoint between sunrise and sunset. Both are planning windows, not declarations that conditions are safe.

Tidal range, spring and neap tides, and the Moon

Spring tides often occur near new and full moon, with a larger difference between high and low water and potentially stronger flow during the middle of the turn. Neap tides are more common near first and last quarter. Local current is not set by astronomical tide alone: wind, swell, seabed shape, and narrow harbor entrances all alter what divers encounter.

Spring tides usually occur near new and full moon and have the largest tidal range; mid and neap tides have progressively smaller ranges.

Sunrise, sunset, and underwater light

Once the Sun is higher, its light travels a shorter path through the water. In clear water with a settled surface, the hours around solar noon usually reveal terrain and color better. Low-angle light at dawn and dusk fades faster underwater. The table's daylight window is not a visibility forecast; suspended sediment, runoff, and waves remain decisive.

Verified access, entry and facilities

Only official or owner-confirmed information is shown. Unverified drafts stay off the page. Check same-day notices and on-site controls before departure.

Getting there with equipment

  • Ferries reach Kaiyuan Harbor in about 120 minutes from Fugang or 120–150 minutes from Houbihu. Confirm schedules and equipment carriage with the ferry company. Official source
  • Ferries can carry scooters but vehicle space is limited and must be confirmed. Tank and gear transport around the island must still be secured and parked without obstructing village roads. Official source

Water entry and exit

  • This is an island-level tide reference, not a claim that Kaiyuan Harbor is a dive entry. Official guidance requires respect for each village’s traditional waters and local site selection. Official source

Rinsing, parking and facilities

  • Kaiyuan Harbor provides ticketing, covered waiting, seats, schedule boards and a weather-protected corridor. These are passenger facilities, not dive-rinse or gearing space. Official source

Rules and ecological care

  • During the roughly February–June flying-fish season, some Tao traditional waters prohibit surface and underwater activities. Confirm that year’s ceremonial areas and times locally. Official source
  • Keep Lanyu diving observational: remove no marine life and keep fins off coral. Do not touch tatala boats or enter traditional fishing and ceremonial spaces without permission. Official source
FAQ

Should I dive on a rising or falling tide?

What matters is slack water, not rising vs falling — the current is weakest around high and low tide, which is best for shore diving and snorkelling. Mid-tide has the strongest, most dangerous current. Match your entry to that day’s tide times and aim for the slack window.

How do I know the best time to get in today?

Check today’s high and low tide times on this page; the roughly 1-hour window around each turning point is slack water with the weakest current. Still confirm the day’s wind, swell, visibility and weather, and defer to your dive shop and on-site notices.

Can I enter the water as soon as the table shows slack water?

No. Slack water is only an estimated period around an astronomical tide turn. Waves, local current, visibility, entry and exit conditions, and closures still require an on-site check. Use a qualified instructor or guide when your training or knowledge of the site is not sufficient.

Can diving proceed normally during Lanyu’s flying-fish season?

Not universally. Some traditional waters prohibit surface and underwater activity roughly February–June; confirm that year’s ceremonial boundaries locally.

Tide times and heights come from the site's daily CWA forecast. Sunrise, sunset, and lunar phase are calculated at build time with the same astronomy engine used by the live pages.
