Nanwan Outlet Diving Tides

Before diving at Nanwan Outlet, check tide turns and wave conditions. Slack-water timing is only a reference; follow instructors, local rules and site conditions.

Nanwan Outlet: seven-day slack water and daylight

Each slack-water range is estimated as 60 minutes either side of high or low tide. The stronger-daylight range is four hours centred on the midpoint between sunrise and sunset. Both are planning windows, not declarations that conditions are safe.

Tidal range, spring and neap tides, and the Moon

Spring tides often occur near new and full moon, with a larger difference between high and low water and potentially stronger flow during the middle of the turn. Neap tides are more common near first and last quarter. Local current is not set by astronomical tide alone: wind, swell, seabed shape, and narrow harbor entrances all alter what divers encounter.

Spring tides usually occur near new and full moon and have the largest tidal range; mid and neap tides have progressively smaller ranges.

Sunrise, sunset, and underwater light

Once the Sun is higher, its light travels a shorter path through the water. In clear water with a settled surface, the hours around solar noon usually reveal terrain and color better. Low-angle light at dawn and dusk fades faster underwater. The table's daylight window is not a visibility forecast; suspended sediment, runoff, and waves remain decisive.

Getting there with equipment

Chushuikou West lies near the Houbihu-to-Maobitou road, and the authority explicitly describes its land area as narrow. Do not assume roadside space is available for prolonged gearing with tanks or long fins. Official source

Water entry and exit

Chushuikou is listed for daytime shore scuba within 200 metres of shore. The designation defines a water-activity range; it does not make coral reef surfaces acceptable entry paths. Official source

Rules and ecological care

This site is adjacent to the Nuclear Plant No. 3 outlet. Official research recorded protected bumphead parrotfish and humphead wrasse on the outlet’s right side; observe and photograph without touching, chasing or collecting. Official source
Kayaks and SUPs are allowed at Chushuikou West only from October through March and are redirected to Houbihu Lagoon in other months. Divers must also keep clear of other lawfully operating activity routes. Official source

FAQ

Should I dive on a rising or falling tide?

What matters is slack water, not rising vs falling — the current is weakest around high and low tide, which is best for shore diving and snorkelling. Mid-tide has the strongest, most dangerous current. Match your entry to that day’s tide times and aim for the slack window.

How do I know the best time to get in today?

Check today’s high and low tide times on this page; the roughly 1-hour window around each turning point is slack water with the weakest current. Still confirm the day’s wind, swell, visibility and weather, and defer to your dive shop and on-site notices.

Can I enter the water as soon as the table shows slack water?

No. Slack water is only an estimated period around an astronomical tide turn. Waves, local current, visibility, entry and exit conditions, and closures still require an on-site check. Use a qualified instructor or guide when your training or knowledge of the site is not sufficient.

How late is night shore diving allowed at Chushuikou?

Until 22:00 in designated areas within 100 metres of shore. Activity after 22:00 requires an advance activity-plan application.
