Taipingshan is northern Taiwan’s most approachable combination of lodging, forest, cloud sea and dark sky. It is humid and forested rather than dry and open like Hehuanshan, so success depends on nights when clouds stay below the recreation area.

Getting there

Drive up from Yilan via the Yizhuan No. 1 road, a long winding mountain route. Enter in daylight and stay inside the area if possible. Opening hours, tickets and lodging rules affect night access, so check notices first.

On site & lodging

Lodging, food, parking and toilets make Taipingshan friendly, but it is still a forest at night. Boardwalks, moss and steps get slippery. Do not enter closed areas to escape lights; fog can cut visibility within minutes.

Milky Way season & timing

The Milky Way season runs March to October, but Yilan’s mountains are strongly affected by monsoon flow and afternoon convection. Check high cloud, low cloud and humidity, not only rain chance. Cloud sea below the ridge can improve darkness dramatically.

What & how to shoot

Taipingshan is ideal for forested night images: cypress trees, lodge eaves, gaps in mist and scattered stars. If only part of the sky opens, switch to star trails through treetops, the Big Dipper above cloud sea, or blue-hour valley layers.

Safety & rules

Cold dampness is the underestimated risk here. Once fog wets clothing, body temperature drops fast. Shoot with companions, avoid slopes and unlit trails, and make sure the driver has slept before a dawn descent.

Galactic core tonight

🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 20:13, sinks back near 02:33, and peaks around 22:23 at roughly 36° in the South.

Access

Up via the Yizhuan-1 road; park entry fee and hours apply — staying inside the park is easiest for night viewing.

Facilities

Lodge, food, hot springs and parking; well-equipped.

Best season

Mar–Oct Milky Way season; watch for cloud and rain from the northeast monsoon.
