Qimei’s strength comes from being far from Magong and open to the southern sea. It is not a high-mountain dark site, but an island mix of grassland, basalt coast and low-glow southern sky, best planned in the stable summer season.

Getting there

Qimei is usually reached from Magong by boat or small aircraft, and sailings depend on wind and waves. Use a scooter or rental car on the island, but scout in daylight first for supplies, fuel, lodging and confusing junctions.

On site & lodging

Supplies are limited compared with the main island, and evening food options can be sparse. Coastal viewpoints often have no railings, lights or toilets. In strong wind, sand and salt cling to lenses, so cloths and dry bags help.

Milky Way season & timing

April to September is the best Milky Way period, with the core rising from the southern to southeastern sea. Qimei’s southern horizon has little city glow, but sea haze, thin cloud and moonlight strongly affect low-horizon detail.

What & how to shoot

Foregrounds include the Twin Hearts stone weir, wave-cut platforms, grass slopes and harbour silhouettes. At popular landmarks, be extra careful and quiet. For less common frames, use low grass lines on south-facing coasts.

Safety & rules

Do not enter unfamiliar wave-cut platforms or intertidal zones at night; tide, swell and slick basalt slow escape. Medical and rescue resources are limited, so shoot with companions and keep lodging contact plus offline maps ready.

Galactic core tonight

🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 20:17, sinks back near 02:47, and peaks around 22:27 at roughly 38° in the South.

Access

Reached by boat or small plane from Magong; rent a vehicle on the island and take care by the shore at night.

Facilities

Guesthouses and small shops; limited supplies — stock up during the day.

Best season

Apr–Sep Milky Way season; summer has the calmest seas and weather.
