Bortle 3 · Rural dark sky | Elevation 40m | SQM ~21.4 | Best view South
An outer island of the Matsu archipelago with very low light pollution — famed for spring 'blue tears' but also excellent for stars and the Milky Way. The Dongju lighthouse area has open views for sea-and-sky night scenes.

Dongju’s night sky has two anchors: a low-glow island and a lighthouse over the sea. In spring and summer, blue tears can join stars and village silhouettes in one trip, but Matsu fog, ferry changes and military restrictions require care.
Dongju usually requires transfers through Nangan or the Juguang route, and fog or sea state can change sailings. The island is small but dark at night, so scout routes between the lighthouse, Fuzheng village and lodging in daylight.
Supplies are concentrated in villages, and evening food or shops are not guaranteed. Lighthouse areas have wide views but can be windy, foggy and slick. Respect military or restricted signs immediately.
April to September suits the Milky Way, and Dongju’s southern and southeastern sea horizons are cleaner than many west-coast sites. Blue-tears season often brings humidity and fog, so transparency matters more than bioluminescence reports for stars.
The Dongju Lighthouse, Fuzheng village, bays and low stone houses all work as foregrounds. Lighthouse beams are distinctive but need separate exposure control. For blue tears and stars, give both sea and sky enough space.
Fog makes orientation difficult, especially on coastal paths and slopes. Do not go down to the shore alone in darkness, cross railings or enter abandoned military structures. Keep transport flexibility if return ferries may change.
🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 20:24, sinks back near 02:34, and peaks around 22:24 at roughly 35° in the South.
Reached via the Taima ferry or a small boat from Nangan; the island is small — walk or rent a vehicle, and mind military restricted zones at night.
Village guesthouses and small shops; limited supplies.
Apr–Sep Milky Way season; the blue tears peak around Apr–Jun.
