Okinawa · Ishigaki Island
Bortle 3 · Rural dark sky | Elevation 182m | SQM ~21.5 | Best view South
One of Japan’s best low-latitude bases for attempting the Southern Cross. Official Okinawa tourism notes that 84 of the 88 modern constellations are visible from Ishigaki, along with the Milky Way and guided night tours.

Ishigaki is one of Japan’s practical travel bases for attempting Crux. Transport, car rental, lodging and tours are mature, and the low latitude lifts southern constellations far higher than mainland Japan. The tradeoff is city glow near town.
New Ishigaki Airport and Ishigaki Port make logistics easy, and a rental car reaches south- or east-facing coasts. For Crux, check month, time and low-horizon azimuth in advance so slopes or buildings do not block the view.
Town, harbour and resort areas have obvious glow, so leave the main streets for stargazing. Coastal sites may lack toilets or lights but are not far from services. Confirm parking, return route and signal before going dark.
Crux is possible roughly December to June, but it remains low and needs a clean southern horizon. Summer to early autumn gives the strongest Milky Way. If low cloud blocks the horizon, shoot overhead Milky Way and bright summer constellations instead.
Shoot the Milky Way over the southern sea, coral coasts, cape silhouettes and guided stargazing scenes. For the island’s many visible constellations, stay longer at one site; for photography, low southern sky and coastline are most distinctive.
Do not climb onto wet reefs at night, and cancel coastal shooting around typhoons or strong swell. In summer, manage insects, heat, hydration and driving fatigue. After drinking or late activities, do not drive out for stars.
🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 21:02, sinks back near 03:22, and peaks around 23:12 at roughly 37° in the South.
New Ishigaki Airport and Ishigaki Port make access straightforward. For the Southern Cross, choose a beach or viewpoint with a clean southern horizon.
Plenty of lodging, car rental and night tours; leave the main town lights for better darkness.
The Southern Cross is possible roughly Dec–Jun but needs a clear low horizon; the Milky Way is strongest from summer into early autumn.
