Dasyueshan is valuable not only for darkness, but for the way forest, cloud sea, sunrise and stars fit into a two-day trip. It is relatively close to Taichung yet reaches the fir and hemlock belt around 2,600 m, giving the sky a strong alpine-forest foreground.

Getting there

The Dasyueshan forest road climbs from Dongshi through a long series of bends, and is not a good first-time night drive when wet. Arrive in the afternoon, settle lodging and observing spots, watch the evening cloud sea, then move to Tianchi or an open car park after dark.

On site & lodging

Facilities are better than roadside Hehuanshan spots: visitor centre, food and lodging are available, but park and lodging rules matter. When shooting forest edges, keep clear of roads and trails; do not wander off-route at night just to find a foreground.

Milky Way season & timing

The Milky Way core is available March to October, but Dasyueshan is especially strong for stars above a cloud sea. Autumn and winter often bring better transparency and cloud decks, turning Orion, the winter Milky Way and dawn colour into a coherent set.

What & how to shoot

Foregrounds here are forest, snags, cloud sea and lodge lights rather than a single summit. Wide lenses can frame the Milky Way through trees; longer lenses compress cloud sea and distant city glow. Stay through blue hour and sunrise if you can.

Safety & rules

Fog, leaves and wet pavement are common on the forest road at night, so do not rush the descent. Wildlife is active here; drive and walk slowly, and avoid sweeping the forest with bright lights while photographing.

Galactic core tonight

🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 20:15, sinks back near 02:35, and peaks around 22:25 at roughly 37° in the South.

Access

Via the Dasyueshan forest road (up from Dongshi) around the 43K Tianchi area; the road is long and slippery at night — go up in daylight.

Facilities

Visitor centre, cabin lodging, restaurant and car park; entry fee and operating hours apply.

Best season

Mar–Oct Milky Way season; autumn/winter brings dramatic cloud seas but cold nights.
