The global Kp index is a single number, and it cannot tell you whether you will see anything from where you are standing. This page uses NOAA's OVATION model instead — a probability grid covering both hemispheres — and combines it with tonight's cloud, dark window and moon to work out what each location can actually expect.
First, the honest part: your eyes and the photos differ
From New Zealand and most mid-latitude sites, the eye usually sees only a pale grey glow toward the pole; the reds and greens in photographs are what a long exposure reveals. Colour and structure become obvious to the naked eye only during strong storms, when the aurora is near overhead. This page labels "camera" and "naked eye" separately rather than blurring the two.
Aurora australis (New Zealand)
The South Island sits at roughly 44–47°S, so the aurora almost always appears near the southern horizon rather than overhead. That makes an unobstructed southern view the first thing to look for — a south-facing coastline beats a high mountain with a ridge in the way.
Rakiura / Stewart Island — Southland · southernmost New Zealand · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 2 · Rakiura means "glowing skies" in Māori — the island is literally named after the aurora. A certified International Dark Sky Sanctuary and the closest easily reached point to the auroral oval in New Zealand, with the open South Pacific filling the entire southern horizon.Best season:Mar–Sep is best. In Dec–Jan the latitude keeps the sky in nautical twilight all night — there is barely any true astronomical darkness.
Slope Point — The Catlins · southernmost point of the South Island · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 2 · The southernmost point of the South Island mainland — just a signpost and wind-bent trees. No town lights anywhere, and the southern horizon is open ocean all the way to Antarctica: the cleanest aurora horizon on the mainland.Best season:Mar–Sep. Geomagnetic activity is statistically stronger around the equinoxes, making March and September the two windows most worth waiting out.
Bluff / Stirling Point — Southland · near Invercargill · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 3 · Home of the famous signpost, looking out over Foveaux Strait. Drive-up access with parking makes it the easiest high-latitude aurora spot in New Zealand; the trade-off is some glow from the town and port behind you.Best season:Mar–Sep. The easy access makes this the spot to head for when an alert fires and you need to be under the sky within the hour.
Curio Bay — The Catlins coast · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 2 · Known for its 180-million-year-old Jurassic fossil forest, with petrified trunks exposed across the wave platform at low tide. Wide-open to the south with almost no artificial light — the fossil platform is a favourite aurora foreground.Best season:Mar–Sep. Check the tide table if you want the fossil forest in frame — it needs low tide.
Nugget Point — The Catlins · south Otago · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 2 · One of New Zealand's most photogenic lighthouses, with the chain of rock stacks known as the Nuggets scattered off the headland. A ten-minute walk from the car park, and the clifftop position gives an exceptionally wide southern view.Best season:Mar–Sep. The track is unlit — bring a head torch and stay well back from the cliff edge.
Oreti Beach — Near Invercargill · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 3 · A 26 km sweep of hard sand you can drive straight onto, only about fifteen minutes from central Invercargill. Wet sand mirrors a strong display beautifully, which is why local chasers keep coming back.Best season:Mar–Sep. Incoming tide and soft patches catch vehicles out — check the tide and conditions before driving on.
Hoopers Inlet (Otago Peninsula) — Dunedin · Otago Peninsula · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 3 · A shallow tidal inlet about thirty minutes from central Dunedin, where still water at low tide makes an ideal reflection foreground. The peninsula ridge blocks most of the city glow and the southern view stays open.Best season:Mar–Sep. Dunedin has New Zealand's most active aurora-watching community, which suits a trip that still needs city accommodation.
Lake Tekapo — Canterbury · Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve · Partly obstructed · Bortle 2 · The southern hemisphere's most famous dark-sky reserve, and the classic Church of the Good Shepherd Milky Way shot. Be clear about the trade-off though: at 44°S it sits two to three degrees further from the pole than the Southland sites, and ridgelines cut the southern horizon. Its strength is the Milky Way, not the aurora.Best season:Aurora needs Mar–Sep and a decent storm; Milky Way season runs Mar–Oct, so one trip can cover both.
Birdlings Flat — Canterbury · near Christchurch · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 4 · A shingle beach about fifty minutes from Christchurch, facing straight out into the Pacific. At 43.8°S it needs a stronger storm than the far south, but it is the fastest open southern horizon to reach for anyone based in the city.Best season:Mar–Sep, and worth waiting for Kp 6+ before driving out. The beach is exposed with a dangerous shore break — stay well back from the water.
Aurora borealis (Arctic)
Most of these sites lie under or right beside the auroral oval, where displays are common even on quiet nights and frequently pass directly overhead. Here the limiting factor is usually cloud, not geomagnetic activity.
Tromsø — Northern Norway · Partly obstructed · Bortle 5 · At 69.6°N it sits directly under the auroral oval, so displays are common even on quiet nights (Kp 1–2). A full-service city with direct flights makes it the lowest-friction place to start; the trade-off is city glow, so head out of town.Best season:Late Sep to late Mar. May–Jul is the midnight sun — no aurora is visible at all.
Lofoten (Haukland) — Northern Norway archipelago · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 3 · Sheer granite peaks dropping straight into the sea, with white-sand beaches under the aurora — the most recognisable image in Nordic aurora photography. At 68.2°N it is still inside the oval, with an open northern seascape and very little light pollution.Best season:Late Sep to Mar. Winter brings strong coastal wind and ice — a rental car needs winter tyres.
Abisko — Swedish Lapland · Open flat ground · Bortle 2 · A rain shadow from the surrounding mountains creates the famous "blue hole" — the sky above Abisko often stays clear while neighbouring areas are overcast. That gives it one of the highest clear-sky rates of any aurora destination, which matters enormously if your trip is only a few nights long.Best season:Late Sep to Mar. The national park has an Aurora Sky Station reached by chairlift.
Kiruna — Swedish Lapland · Open flat ground · Bortle 4 · Sweden's northernmost city and the gateway airport into Lapland, near the Esrange Space Centre and the Icehotel — handy if you want to combine aurora nights with other Arctic plans. The town itself has moderate light pollution, so drive out.Best season:Late Sep to Mar. January averages below −15°C — full Arctic layering is not optional.
Kilpisjärvi — Finnish Lapland · three-country border · Open flat ground · Bortle 2 · A lakeside village at Finland's far northwest corner where three countries meet. At 69°N it matches Tromsø's latitude but with a population around a hundred and almost no light pollution. The frozen lake gives a wide-open northern horizon in winter.Best season:Late Sep to Mar. Services are sparse — fuel up and carry food before you head out.
Rovaniemi — Finnish Lapland · on the Arctic Circle · Partly obstructed · Bortle 5 · Sitting exactly on the Arctic Circle (66.5°N), this is the most family-friendly aurora base on the list. But it is also one of the lowest northern latitudes here and fairly bright — on a quiet night you may see nothing without driving 20–30 minutes out of town.Best season:Late Sep to Mar. Santa Claus Village and similar attractions make it workable for travelling companions who are not there for photography.
Þingvellir — Southwest Iceland · Golden Circle · Open flat ground · Bortle 3 · A World Heritage site, home of the old parliament and the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates. Only about 45 minutes from Reykjavík, making it Iceland's most convenient dark site — the real enemy here is not latitude but Iceland's notoriously changeable cloud.Best season:Sep to early Apr. Iceland is cloudy — budget extra nights to buy yourself more chances at a clear one.
Jökulsárlón — Southeast Iceland · Vatnajökull · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 2 · A glacial lagoon of drifting blue icebergs whose still surface doubles the aurora in reflection — the signature Icelandic aurora composition. No towns nearby means very little light pollution.Best season:Sep to early Apr. It is about a five-hour drive from Reykjavík — check road.is for winter conditions first.
Fairbanks (Cleary Summit) — Interior Alaska · Open flat ground · Bortle 3 · A continental interior climate gives it far better odds of clear skies than coastal Alaska, and it sits under the oval — one of the most reliable aurora bases in North America. Cleary Summit is about thirty minutes north of town, high up with an open northern view.Best season:Late Aug to mid-Apr. January regularly drops below −30°C — keep camera batteries against your body.
Yellowknife — Northwest Territories · Great Slave Lake · Open water — nothing in the way · Bortle 3 · Although it is only 62.5°N geographically, the magnetic pole's offset toward the Canadian side puts its geomagnetic latitude very high, right under the oval — the clearest illustration anywhere that magnetic latitude is what counts, not the number on the map. Dry inland air gives excellent clear-sky odds on top of that.Best season:Mid-Aug to mid-Apr. Winter is brutally cold but clear; autumn still has open water on Great Slave Lake for reflections.
Churchill — Manitoba · Hudson Bay · Open flat ground · Bortle 2 · Another beneficiary of the magnetic pole's offset — at just 58.8°N it still sits under the oval. Famous for polar bears, so an autumn trip can combine both; there is no road in, so you arrive by train or plane.Best season:Mid-Aug to Apr. October–November is polar bear season, when accommodation books out far in advance.
Kangerlussuaq — West Greenland · Open flat ground · Bortle 2 · Greenland's main international airport, tucked at the head of a long fjord and sheltered from maritime weather — one of the clearest places in Greenland, with roughly 300 clear days a year. Almost no population means almost no light pollution, and the ice sheet edge is within reach.Best season:Sep to early Apr. Flights are infrequent — leave real slack in the itinerary.
Four things worth understanding before you chase
Magnetic latitude is not the latitude on the map — Aurora follows Earth's magnetic field, not the grid on an atlas. The magnetic pole is offset toward the Canadian side, which is why Yellowknife sits under the oval at only 62.5°N while European cities at the same latitude see almost nothing. The same applies in the south: New Zealand's magnetic latitude runs higher than its geographic one, and that is exactly why Invercargill at 46°S gets aurora while France at 46°N does not.
At mid latitudes you are watching the horizon, not the zenith — Aurora emits between about 100 and 250 km up, so it can still clear your horizon while sitting hundreds of kilometres poleward of you. That changes what makes a good site: in New Zealand it is not altitude or remoteness that matters most, but whether the southern horizon is open. A five-metre beach facing the sea beats a mountain lookout with a ridge to the south.
The two hemispheres lose their darkness at opposite times — The Arctic has the midnight sun from May to July, when no aurora is visible at all; New Zealand's deep south sits in twilight all night through December and January, with no true astronomical darkness either. The northern chasing season runs September to March, the southern one March to September. Geomagnetic activity also tends to run stronger around the equinoxes, making March and September worth targeting in both hemispheres.
Kp lags; the live signal is the solar wind's Bz — Kp is a three-hour average, so by the time it rises you have often already missed part of the show. What actually decides whether the aurora fires is the Bz component of the solar wind's magnetic field: only when Bz swings strongly southward (negative) does the solar wind couple energy efficiently into Earth's magnetosphere. That signal gives only about 30–60 minutes of warning, which is why it pairs naturally with live alerts.
